Client handoff

Hand a finished site to your client: they change texts, images and links, while the layout, styles, theme and settings stay as you built them.

On this page

Agency. Without an Agency licence the settings are visible but locked, with an Agency badge.

When a site is finished, Client handoff lets your client keep it up to date without breaking the design. Everyone except the people you choose, the client's administrators included, can then change the texts, images and links on every page, but not the layout, the styles, the theme or the settings. You and your team keep full access.

You find it under Uncoder → Settings → Client handoff.

Hand a site over

  1. Open Client handoff

Go to Uncoder → Settings and click Client handoff in the list on the left.

  2. Turn it on

Turn on Hand this site over.

  3. Choose who keeps full access

Under Full access, tick the people who keep designing the site, such as your colleagues. You are always ticked: whoever saves keeps full access. Administrators are marked with an Administrator badge.

  4. Add your contact

Type an email address or phone number in Contact for design changes. Your client sees it on the dashboard and in the editor.

  5. Save

Click Save. The message The site is handed over. confirms it, and the card shows Handed over with the date.

What your client can and cannot do

Everyone without full access, administrators included, edits content only:

Your client canYour client cannot
Change the texts, images and links of every page, post and template, on the Content tab of the inspectorAdd, move, duplicate, delete, hide or restyle elements
Save their changes, as far as their WordPress role allowsOpen the Design, Behaviour and Styles settings, or change the Design System
Read form messages under SubmissionsOpen the Theme Builder, Design System, Starter Sites, Cloud Library, Page Checks, AI & MCP or Settings screens
Use the Uncoder Home screen with their recently edited pagesImport site kits, starter sites or premium sections, or run Find & replace across the site

In more detail:

  • The Uncoder menu shows only Home and Submissions.
  • Home shows the message The design of this site is locked, or Designed and looked after by your agency's name when you use white-label, followed by your contact for design changes.
  • In the editor, the inspector says Select a text, image or link on the canvas to change it. Layout and styles are locked., with your name and contact.
  • Design changes are refused, even if someone tries another way: the message says that the site was handed over and names your contact.
  • AI apps a client connects can read the site but not change it, like for the Content only role level.

Client handoff works on top of Roles & access: it gives everyone without full access the Content only level, whatever their role. A role set to No access keeps no access.

Warning

Handoff prevents accidental design changes. It is not a lock against administrators: they can still manage plugins and WordPress itself.

Change it or turn it off

Open Settings → Client handoff again with an administrator account that has full access. Change the people or the contact and click Save. To end the handoff, turn off Hand this site over and click Save. The message Handoff is off: everyone has their usual access again. confirms it.

If none of the people with full access is an administrator any more, administrators get their full access back automatically, so someone can always turn handoff off.

When the Agency licence ends

The site stays handed over. The card says The site stays handed over: changing who has full access needs an active Agency licence, while Turn handoff off always works.

Tip

Combine handoff with white-label and its Only me option: your client then sees your agency's name everywhere and does not see the licence and agency settings.
